Brightness Test

Test your monitor's ability to display full brightness range from pure black to pure white.

Switch between gradient and 16 / 32 / 64 gray step modes inside the test

What to look for

Gradient mode
The smooth transition from black to white should be even — no visible banding or sudden jumps in brightness. Banding indicates limited bit depth or poor gamma calibration.
16-step mode
Each of the 16 gray bands should be visually distinct from its neighbors. If the first two or last two bands look identical, your monitor clips in the shadows or highlights.
32 and 64-step modes
Finer tests for higher-quality monitors. A well-calibrated display should show visible separation between every band even at 64 steps.

Testing tips

  • Dim your room — ambient light masks shadow details and makes clipping harder to see.
  • Set your monitor to its native resolution before testing.
  • Disable HDR mode — it can override the values this tool sends.
  • Wait 15–20 minutes after turning on the monitor for it to reach full operating temperature.
  • Compare the gradient result at different brightness settings to find the sweet spot for your environment.
